The Gate Lodge originally served as living quarters for the keeper of Mountain Lodge, the summer Peak residence of the Governor. It was built between 1900 and 1902. Mountain Lodge was constructed in the style of Scottish lodges and was described by the media as the most imposing and handsome architecture on the peak. Gate Lodge, however, is in Renaissance style which is a major deviation from Mountain Lodge. Mountain Lodge was demolished in 1946, leaving only Gate Lodge. Although Gate Lodge is a small building, it was planned in a very functional way. It was declared a monument in 1995.
