Built in 1906, it was the first formal institute of bacteriology in Hong Kong. In 1972, the Institute was relocated to a new site at Victoria Road; the old building was then used as a storeroom for the Pathology Service of the Health Department. It was declared a monument in 1990. In 1995, it was transferred to the Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences Society and became a museum open to the public.
