Old Tsan Yuk Maternity Hospital
(Western District Community Centre)

36A Western Street

The building was first built in 1922 as the Tsan Yuk Maternity Hospital operated under the Chinese Public Dispensary Committee. It became the teaching and practice hospital of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the University of Hong Kong in 1926. By 1929, it functioned again as an obstetrical unit and was handed to the government in 1934. After the war, the building was renamed Tsan Yuk Social Service Centre and the hospital operation was relocated to Hospital Road in 1955. The name was changed to Western District Community Centre in 1973. The building comprises originally a three-storey hospital block with a basement, a two-storey staff quarters with an annex and a one-storey servant quarters. These are now converted into offices and function rooms for the community centre.
