Old Mental Hospital
(Sai Ying Pun Community Complex)

2 High Street

Featuring arched verandahs and massive retaining walls under a pitched tiled roof, this building was constructed in 1892 as quarters for the foreign nursing staff of the Civil Hospital. It was later converted into and served as a mental hospital until 1961 when the Castle Peak Mental Hospital opened, after which it was used as a day treatment centre for psychiatric outpatients until 1971. It was then left vacant until the government decided in the 1990s to build a community centre, which opened in 2001, while retaining the facade. The facade of the Old Mental Hospital was declared a monument in 2015.
