Gate Lodge of the
Former Mountain Lodge

The Gate Lodge was originally the gatekeeper's lodge of the Former Mountain Lodge - the Governor's summer residence on the Peak. It was built between 1900 and 1902, as part of the rebuilding of the Mountain Lodge since the latter's destruction in 1897. The architect was Palmer & Turner whose design for the main lodge was inspired by Scottish Baronial architecture while the Gate Lodge, with no obvious reason, was Classical Revival in style. The rebuilt Mountain Lodge suffered from destruction and disrepair during World War II and was demolished in 1946. The Gate Lodge, however, retains and was declared a monument in 1995.
