Opening Remarks Action

The Chairman started the meeting at 4:45 p.m. Before going into the agenda items, he informed Members that two historic buildings in Hong Kong, namely the Liu Ying Lung Study Hall, Sheung Shui and the St Andrew's Church, Tsim Sha Tsui had won the 2006 UNESCO Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation. He congratulated the organisations concerned and said that the AAB/AMO would liaise with UNESCO on the detailed arrangements for the award presentation ceremony in Hong Kong. He also informed the media present that at the preceding closed meeting, the AAB discussed the grading of Dragon Garden and rated it as a Grade II historical building. He added that a press release would be issued to inform the public that the son of Lee Iu-cheung, Dr Lee Shiu, had reached an agreement with Government to donate the Dragon Garden to Government for management and opening to public.

Item 1    Matters Arising and Progress Report on Education and Publicity

2.	Mrs Ada Yau briefed Members on the following education and publicity activities organized between May and July 2006, saying that the detailed programme would be elaborated further when the next paper on AMO's Education and Publicity Plan was discussed:
	Exhibitions Heritage tours Lectures and Seminars Workshops Friends of Heritage Young Friends of Heritage Docent services

Item 2		Progress Report on Education and Publicity Plan of the Antiquities and Monuments Office for 2006 (Board Paper AAB/74/2005-06)

4.	Mrs Ada Yau introduced the background, guiding principles and progress of the education and publicity plan of AMO for 2006 as summarised below:
	Underlying Principles: Community-based: community involvement should be a major objective; Sustainability: the programmes should enhance sustainability of the education and promotional effort, rather than being short-term and sporadic; Capacity building: the community should be encouraged to undertake heritage projects on their own; and Partnership: the Government should seek cooperation with non-Government sectors in promoting heritage education and publicity. Work Plan for 2006 Community Capacity Development Provision of Heritage information and resources: Heritage Reference library - open since October 2005 Geographical Information System on Heritage (GISH) - launched since late 2005 Hong Kong Traditional Chinese Architectural Information System - to be launched in early 2007 Heritage Virtual Tour - to be launched in early 2007 Capacity Building Projects Community - joint ventures with non-Government organizations, district councils, community involvement in the Old Ping Shan Police Station Visitor's Centre cum Exhibition Galleries, Hong Kong Heritage Awards Scheme Education Sector - cooperation with Education and Manpower Bureau and training programmes for Young Friend of Heritage Scheme Tourism Sector - tourism training courses for tourism sector personnel and liaison with the Hong Kong Association of Registered Tour Co-ordinators General Public - involvement of Friends of Heritage in conducting opinion surveys, guided tours, production of AMO newsletter and website Provision of Effective Communication Channels Newsletter - uploaded onto AMO website in 2006 AMO Website - enrichment of AMO website by adding new information such as online exhibitions Mass Media - collaboration with the press to disseminate information on Hong Kong's heritage Diversified Interpretative Programmes Venue-based Activities - various exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and family programmes at the Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre and the Old Ping Shan Police Station Outreach Programmes - on-site interpretation such as guided tour services at three heritage trails and docent service in Sheung Yiu Village and Tai Fu Tai Mansion
5.	Members noted the Progress Report on Education and Publicity Plan of the AMO for 2006.
6.	The Chairman commended AMO on the rich programme of activities organised.
