Law Uk (meaning “House of the Law family”) has a history of over 200 years, and is the only Hakka village house left intact in Chai Wan. It was named after the original owner, surnamed Law.
Law Uk is a typical example of “three-jian (bay), two-lang (chamber)” Hakka vernacular architecture in a simple symmetrical layout. The house has a central main hall. Between the front door and the main hall is a light well, flanked by lofted bedrooms, a storeroom and a kitchen. The forecourt of Law Uk used to be an area for grain and laundry drying, as well as social gatherings.
In view of the historical and ethnographic value of Law Uk, the former Urban Council’s Museums Select Committee decided to conserve the building as a folk museum in May 1976. The full restoration of Law Uk was completed in 1989.
Law Uk was declared a monument in 1989.
