Organised by the South Development and Sustainable Lantau Office of the Civil Engineering and Development Department, in association with the Antiquities and Monuments Office of the Development Bureau and supported by the Chinese Temples Committee, the “Lantau Temples Tell Stories” exhibition is being staged at the Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre from 1 October to 13 December 2026.

Nestled in villages in the mountainous and coastal areas of Lantau Island are many Chinese temples, which serve as both places of worship and carriers of rich history and culture, showcasing the craftsmanship of traditional Lingnan temples. Through documentary research and field studies, as well as the layout, architectural features, historic relics and craftsmanship of the temples, the curatorial team traced the relationship amongst the temples, the deities worshipped and the local communities.

The exhibition presents 19 selected temples in four themes: “Map of Lantau Temples”, “Temples and Communities”, “Temple Architecture” and “The Opera Acts on Ridges”. Supplemented by rich images, temple models, 3D prints of pottery ridges and drone videos, the exhibition narrates the captivating stories of these temples.
