In the vast expanse of Chinese history, Tang dynasty (618–907) is a dazzling star. Its sound political system and law influenced China for more than a thousand years. As agricultural production developed and handicraft techniques advanced, people’s lives became more vibrant and colourful. Literature and art flourished, resulting in the creation of timeless works of poetry, prose, music, dance, calligraphy, painting and sculpture. The exchange among different peoples and regions was unprecedented. Society was characterised by an openness and cultural integration unique to this era.
Divided into eight sections, the exhibition illustrates the golden age of multicultural fusion and openness during Tang dynasty. The eight sections are as follows: (1) On the road to Great Tang: this section details the sound administrative system and efficient governance during Tang dynasty; (2) Building the Capital: this section recreates the rigorous planning and cosmopolitan grandeur of Chang’an city; (3) Life in Chang’an: this section portrays the colourful lifestyle of Chang’an city; (4) All Rivers Run into the Sea: this illustrates the coexistence of Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism and foreign religions; (5) World of the Literati: this highlights the refined lifestyle of Tang dynasty literati; (6) Pursuit of Perfection: this showcases the pinnacle of craftsmanship in Tang dynasty; (7) Looking West from Chang’an and (8) and Setting Sail: these two sections depict prosperous scenes along the Silk Road and the Maritime Silk Road, reflecting Hong Kong’s position as an important node along the Maritime Silk Road.
The exhibition features altogether 298 pieces/sets of exhibits which are drawn from 28 cultural institutions in 10 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities in Mainland China and 29 important archaeological finds dated to Tang dynasty unearthed in Hong Kong.
