The 16th Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition ─ Hong Kong Response ExhibitionVertical Fabric: density in landscape100 towers 100 architects
Responding to the theme of “Freespace” of the 16th International Architecture Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia, The Hong Kong Exhibition Vertical Fabric: density in landscape demonstrates the urban conditions of Hong Kong and explores the freespace through towers. The exhibition manifests innovation within constraints while generating extraordinary spaces from ordinary form. Over 100 white tower model bases, each with a 360mm square plan extrusion and structure of 2 metres in height, are open for the 89 groups of exhibitors to redefine the typological, spatial and façade potential while maintaining the constraint of its envelope as a collective urban form. The exhibitors, including architects from Hong Kong, the Mainland, Taiwan and overseas, are invited to design their towers of freespace, making statements on tower typology in the vertical city.
By installing 116 towers marching along the patio extending into the exhibition rooms, the Hong Kong Response Exhibition the vertical fabric illustrates the compactness of Hong Kong’s urban form. The exhibition provides a platform for dialogue with the world, shaping a discourse of Hong Kong’s urbanism and vertical architecture. More importantly, facing challenges in land conservation for the high density city of tomorrow, the exhibition provides architects with the opportunity to rethink the design of towers, incubating visions for vertical freespace facing global challenges in technology, environment, society and culture.
