Peak Café

The Peak Café building was originally built in 1901 as a shelter for both private and public sedan chairs. Before this, the site housed a workshop and quarters for the British engineers responsible for constructing the Peak Tram line. Old photographs reveal that the present structure bears few similarities with the original – the open concrete arches have been fitted with doors, a steel-reinforced wooden truss now sits on a brick and concrete wall on top of the load-bearing stone walls – and it is difficult to ascertain how much of the original has been retained or refurbished. The building was converted into a café in 1947.
